Last year we had an idea, a vision. What if Live Like Jack created a program that focused on grief support for children. We put our feelers out to the community to assess the need. The response was overwhelming. The feedback was that it was a much needed resource. We were flooded with emails and messages from parents all over the area. Out of this, Healing Hearts was born. The first grief support group in the area, reaching children K-12.
Through grants and generous donors not only were we able turn our vision into reality, but out of that came the Live Like Jack Grief library. A large selection of books that are offered to anyone in the community. Our own Executive Director not only holds a degree in Psychology, but in the last year has become a certified NLP life/executive coach and has also completed the Grief to Gratitude coach certification program, specializing in grief coaching. Angie is the only one in the state of Iowa certified in this program.
It’s hard to believe that we are over halfway through our first grief groups and are registering children for our next sessions starting in July. Over the last five months we have watched these children become comfortable around other children who have suffered a loss. We have watched them open up, share, create. We have also shared many tears and laughs along the way. We are grief coaching clients every other week. The immense feeling of happiness that is felt when you know your organization and work is impacting others is indescribable. No one is turned away and no one pays for any of these services. We feel that children and adults who have have suffered the unthinkable should never have to pay to get help in navigating their grief.
But we need more. More people to understand the process of grieving. We want our mission to reach even farther. We want to involve schools, churches, businesses and other organizations. We want to create workshops for people who love someone who is grieving. There needs to be more understanding, compassion and acceptance.
This is our passion. This is why I decided to dance in The Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce Dancing With The Stars. I am raising funds to further our mission and create something even bigger. Please help us reach our goal and provide even more outreach to our community.
